About the Parish
The Parishes of St Ambrose and St Christopher serve the people of Speke and Hale Village.
Hale Village dates from before the Norman Conquest.
In the 1920's Liverpool envisioned Speke as a 'satellite town' providing new opportunities away from the City Centre Slums. In 1939 Rev James McCarthy was Priest in Charge of a new parish for Speke's 400 Catholics.
In May 1940 the first public mass since the Reformation [the last being in
nearby Speke Hall. In 1957 St Christopher's church was built which could
accommodate 1200. Which sadly due to structural defects was replaced by
a new church in 1997.
In 1961 the new church of St Ambrose opened accommodating a
congregation of 700.
Since 2010 St Ambrose and St Christopher operate together with one
priest.
Our endeavour is to be the Good News of Jesus by living our faith as a
Catholic Community in worship, service, and support of one another.
Along with our churches and parish schools we have St Ambrose Parish
Centre, Youth Base run by parent volunteers, Faith in Action Group,
contemporary church singers and musicians.
Home performance base for
the Merseywave Choir and Young Singers with music leader Jason Ellis
and acclaimed Mezzo Soprano Kathryn Rudge.
